Description
The monument to Yuri Gagarin in Orenburg was erected on Yuri Gagarin Avenue in 1961, shortly after his historic flight into space. This idea is associated with Gagarin’s training at the Orenburg Higher Military Aviation School named after I. S. Polbin in 1955-1957.
The monument, created by sculptor Yu. L. Chernov and architects G. G. Isakovich and A. I. Agafonov, is a sculpture of Yuri Gagarin in a flight suit on a granite pedestal. The height of the sculpture is 4 meters. Gagarin's autograph is engraved on the front of the pedestal.
After an act of hooliganism in March 2021, as a result of which the monument was damaged, it was restored by April 12, 2021 - the anniversary of the first flight into space. The damage was estimated at 350 thousand rubles.
The monument is installed on a granite pedestal, on the back of which there are two vertical stainless steel steles, approximately twice as high as the height of the monument together with the pedestal.
Materials used for the monument: bronze for the Gagarin sculpture, granite for the pedestal and stainless steel for the steles.
