Description
The Russian Arctic National Park is a unique natural space located in the northern part of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and the Franz Josef Land archipelago. Created on June 15, 2009, this park occupies vast areas, including land and sea areas.
The park's area is an impressive 1,426,000 hectares, of which 632,090 hectares are on land and 793,910 hectares are offshore. The region is renowned for its unique biodiversity and abundance of species that are rarely found elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere.
The "Russian Arctic" is home to a variety of animal species, including polar bears, bowhead whales, arctic foxes, walruses, harp seals and ringed seals. You can also find a variety of bird species here, and the vegetation includes mosses, lichens and some flowering plants.
However, nature is not the only thing that makes this park unique. On its territory there are historical places and objects related to the history and development of the Russian Arctic since the 16th century. Here you can find traces of the activities of Russian polar explorers such as Rusanov and Sedov, as well as objects related to the travels of Willem Barents and the Russian Pomors.
The Russian Arctic National Park is not only a valuable conservation site, but also an important cultural heritage. This region provides enormous opportunities for eco-tourism and scientific research.
However, despite all its values, there is a danger to the park's unique ecosystem. In 2016, part of the territory of the Franz Josef Land reserve was excluded from the park, which led to the deprivation of its protective status. This could lead to unwanted extraction of oil and other natural resources, threatening the integrity of this amazing natural complex.
Yet the Russian Arctic National Park remains a place of amazing beauty and unique nature, attracting researchers, tourists and environmentalists. Its visit becomes not only an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Arctic nature, but also a chance to contribute to its preservation for future generations.
