Description
Vera Island is a complex of archaeological sites located on Lake Turgoyak in the Chelyabinsk region. This island, which is the largest island in the lake, is famous for its megalithic structures, including chamber tombs, dolmens and menhirs.
Vera Island is located near the western shore of the lake and can turn into a peninsula at low water levels, connecting to the shore with an isthmus. The island got its name from the legendary hermit Vera, who lived here in the 19th century. The old names of the island, such as “Pinay Island,” are also preserved in the memory of local residents.
The following archaeological sites were found on the island:
- Ruined buildings of the 18th-19th centuries, presumably Old Believers.
- Ancient sites of an ancient man of the Stone Age.
- Settlements of the Early Iron Age.
- A complex of megalithic structures representing burial structures.
The largest structure on the island is Megalith No. 1, which is a stone structure measuring 19x6 m. It consists of three chambers and corridors connecting them and was probably used as a temple complex. Sculptures of a bull and a wolf were discovered inside the megalith.
Other megaliths were also discovered on the island, such as Megalith No. 2 and Megalith No. 3, as well as the cult site “Island of Faith 9” with a system of menhirs associated with astronomical directions.
Currently, ongoing scientific research is being carried out on Vera Island, and there are also plans to open an archaeological reserve and an open-air museum.
