Description
Mount Gebius is a significant landmark in the region, located on the border of the Gelendzhik and Tuapse regions. Its height is 735.6 meters, and it is located 10 kilometers from the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka to the northeast. The mountain is visible from many sections of the Novorossiysk highway. At the top of the mountain there is a spacious clearing hung with flowers and grains, creating a beautiful sight.
The route to Mount Gebius can be combined with an excursion to the Tesheb Falls. The length of the walking part of the route is about 14 kilometers, and the journey from the highway and back usually takes from 4 to 4.5 hours.
On old maps the top of the mountain is designated as Mount Begius (Flat), while on modern maps it is called Gebius. There are also spellings: Bigius, Bigus and Gebius. Perhaps these are two different names for the same peak.
There is an assumption that both names of the mountain are of Adyghe origin. According to one theory, Gebius can be translated as "head of two brothers" and Bigius as "jug". However, such a translation does not correspond to reality, since in these toponyms there are no morphological elements indicating “head”, “two”, “brothers” or “jug”.
