Description

The Staromuradymovskaya Cave, also known as "Muradymovskaya-1" or "Smoked", is one of the main attractions of the Muradymovskoye Gorge Nature Reserve. Along with the Golubiny Grotto and Novomuradymovskaya Cave, it is very popular among tourists and researchers.

The cave got its name "Smoked" because of the soot and smoke that cover its walls and ceiling. These traces were left by both ancient residents and modern tourists who used torches instead of flashlights. There is an assumption that the soot on the walls and ceiling could have appeared several thousand years ago as a result of a forest fire.

Architecture and Geography

The cave is small, with a length of only 210 meters. The entrance begins with a corridor about 1.5 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. After 45 meters, this corridor turns into a gallery 4 meters wide and up to 24 meters high. At the end of the gallery there is a ledge about 16 meters high, which can only be climbed with a safety harness. At the top of the ledge, a fan of corridors from six to 30 meters long diverges.

Rock paintings

The main attraction of the Staromuradymovskaya cave are the rock paintings of ancient people, whose age may exceed 10 thousand years. These paintings are located about 60 meters from the entrance.

Closure and security

Currently, the entrance to the cave is closed with an iron grate to preserve the historical layers and protect it from destruction. Official expeditions and archaeological excavations are planned to study and preserve this unique cultural heritage.

Current state

Currently, the walls of the cave are covered with a layer of wet soot. In some places you can see moss, and further the walls become black. Inside the cave there is a 24-meter-high hall and a system of short corridors ending in dead ends. Despite its closure, the cave continues to attract the attention of researchers and tourists.

Conclusion

Despite its closure, the Staromuradymovskaya Cave remains an important site for historical and archaeological research. Its unique rock paintings and history attract the attention of researchers, and its natural beauty continues to attract tourists.
