Description

St. Nicholas Cathedral, located on Chkalova Street in the center of Orenburg, is one of the most visited churches in the region and a significant object of the metropolis and diocese. This stone cathedral was founded in 1883 by Cossacks of the Orenburg village at the expense of parishioners and consecrated in 1886. Initially, the cathedral was dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and since 1910 it also honors the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon.

During Soviet times, the temple was closed, but not destroyed, and was used for various purposes, such as a hostel and housing the archives of the NKVD. However, in 1944 the cathedral was reopened, and from 1955 to 1958 it was restored and rebuilt. Work then began on the temple schedule, and new altars were introduced. In 1988–1990, the cathedral underwent reconstruction, during which a new dome was built, and in subsequent years a new bell tower, water chapel, administrative building and other structures were added.

Today, St. Nicholas Cathedral serves not only as a place of worship, but also as the center of the spiritual life of the community. It hosts Sunday schools for children, as well as various cultural events and exhibitions. The cathedral is also known for its shrines, including the Tabyn Icon of the Mother of God and the icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov with a particle of relics.

The history and rich cultural heritage of St. Nicholas Cathedral make it an important symbol of the religious and cultural life of Orenburg.
