Description

The monument "Scholarly Cat" in Orenburg, installed under an old oak tree opposite the Gorky Regional Drama Theater, has its own interesting history and has become a popular spot among locals and tourists.

According to legend, in 1833, the great poet Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin rested on a bench under this oak during his visit to Orenburg. In honor of this event, the monument "Scholarly Cat" was installed. The bronze figure of a cat reading a book has become a symbol of wisdom and knowledge.

The monument was unveiled in 2013 and was adorned with a beautiful stylish chain hung on stakes around the oak. However, in 2014, the cat lost its glasses. Nevertheless, this did not prevent the monument from retaining its popularity among the city's residents and guests.

The location of the monument is not very accessible, but this does not hinder people's belief in miracles and magic. The fact that philology students from the nearby pedagogical institute rub the "golden nose" of the cat before exams in hopes of success is evidence that this monument holds a special place in the hearts of locals.

The monument to the “Scientist Cat” was dismantled in Orenburg

On December 18, 2023, it was decided to dismantle the monument to Pushkin's "Scholarly Cat," which had stood in its former place for a long time. However, this decision caused some concern among the citizens who had grown fond of this monument.

The Orenburg administration decided to relocate the cat to the City History Museum, where it will take its place near the Pushkin monument. However, the exact location for the installation of the monument has not yet been determined, and the cat has been temporarily placed in storage.

The city hall assures that there is no need to worry about the cat statue, and it will be installed in a new location in the spring, as soon as weather permits. The installation work is planned to be completed by the museum's birthday, celebrated on April 30. Thus, the monument "Scholarly Cat" will retain its significance and become part of a new historical site in the city.
