Description

A seven-meter bronze sculpture of Archangel Michael, the head of the Heavenly Host and patron of Sochi, is installed on Kurortny Prospekt in the Central District of the city. The sculpture is located on the esplanade. The monument is a pedestal made of red granite, a twenty-meter reinforced concrete column and a bronze statue of Archangel Michael. The figure of the saint dominates the main street of the resort, soaring almost thirty meters into the air. The monument was designed by architect Sergei Sukhorukov and sculptor Vladimir Zelenko, and cast at the Belarusian enterprise Otmennoye Litie. The opening of the monument took place on May 10, 2006.

Religious significance

Archangel Michael is one of the four angels guarding the four cardinal directions. He is revered as the conqueror of evil spirits, and believers turn to him with requests for healing. Michael is considered the patron saint of Sochi, Arkhangelsk, Ufa and Kyiv.

Historical significance

The monument was erected near the burial site of Russian soldiers who died defending the Fort Alexandria fortress, the citadel of modern Sochi.

Additional information

In addition to the monument, the city of Sochi also houses the Cathedral of Michael the Archangel. The installation of the monument began in 2005 based on a project developed by architect Alexander Rukavishnikov and sculptor Alexander Burdin.

Visual perception

It is difficult not to notice the beautiful and majestic column with the sculpture of Michael the Archangel, it is located on the esplanade of Kurortny Prospekt. The figure of the Archangel holds a sword and a cross, symbolizing protection and patronage.
