Description

The Sochi Art Museum named after Dmitry Zhilinsky is a cultural and educational institution located in the Central District of Sochi. The museum building was constructed according to the design of academician of architecture I. V. Zholtovsky in 1936. Initially, it was intended for the Commissioner of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the USSR for the construction of the resort town of Sochi-Matsesta and for several decades was used as the City Committee of the CPSU. The building is an architectural monument of federal significance. Its end, facing Kurortny Prospekt, is decorated with the sculpture "Mason" by N. K. Venttsel, and on the side of Ordzhonikidze Street - the sculpture "Carpenter" by L. I. Efimova (Shulik). Since 1972, the building has housed the Sochi Exhibition Hall, and since 1976 - the Sochi Art Museum. In 2019, the museum was named after Dmitry Zhilinsky.

Collection

The museum collection contains about 6,000 exhibits, including works of ancient, Russian, Soviet and foreign art. Among them are works by such masters as V. E. Makovsky, M. K. Klodt, L. F. Lagorio, P. P. Konchalovsky, S. V. Gerasimov, P. V. Williams, I. I. Mashkov, S. B. Nikritin, N. I. Andronov and D. D. Zhilinsky.

Permanent exhibitions

The museum exposition covers the period from the 1st century BC. to the present day and includes several permanent exhibitions:

  • Russian art of the 19th-20th centuries: works by I. I. Shishkin, I. K. Aivazovsky, V. D. Polenov, K. S. Petrov-Vodkin.
  • Antique silver and edged weapons: Sarmatian iron swords, Attic bronze helmet, fragments of horse equipment and silver bowls.
  • Graphics of the 19th-20th centuries: works by B. M. Kustodiev, V. A. Serov, M. K. Sokolov and other famous artists.
  • Russian expanses (20th century painting).
  • Wonders of multimedia: three halls equipped with modern electronic equipment for creating video installations.

Temporary exhibitions and events

Every month the museum organizes temporary exhibitions, jewelry fairs and presents works by artists from the south of Russia. Its halls regularly display collections of Moscow artists, and every summer it hosts a vernissage of Ekaterina Rozhdestvenskaya. The museum has an art salon where you can buy works of art, art antiques and folk art and crafts.

Modern equipment

The museum is equipped with modern equipment, including Braille displays, audio guides, virtual stands and 3D cinema equipment, which makes it accessible and attractive to visitors.
