Description

The N. A. Ostrovsky Literary Memorial Museum is a cultural and educational institution in the city of Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It was opened on May 1, 1937, in memory of the famous Soviet writer Nikolai Ostrovsky. The museum occupies an area of ​​1,018 m², of which 550 m² are exhibition halls. The museum's collection contains more than 37,000 items, including book rarities, household items and applied art from the late 19th - first half of the 20th century, documents, iconography, Soviet-era numismatics, paintings and graphics. ## Collection

Memorial House of N. A. Ostrovsky

Built in 1935 as a gift to the writer from the USSR government (architect Ya. T. Kravchuk). The house is a typical dacha architecture building in Sochi in the 1930s and preserves the authentic furnishings of the Ostrovsky family. The house contains a unique library, rare documents and photographs. Nikolai Ostrovsky lived here the last months of his life and worked on his second novel, Born of the Storm. The museum is dedicated to Nikolai Ostrovsky, a famous writer who lost his sight and the ability to move, but found the strength to become a world-class author. His novel "How the Steel Was Tempered" gained worldwide fame back in the 1930s and is still in demand. The museum preserves the atmosphere of N. Ostrovsky's intense creative life and struggle.

History of Creation and Development

The museum was founded on February 15, 1937. Since its opening, the museum has become famous not only in Russia, but also abroad. The museum's international fame remains today, thanks to N. Ostrovsky's novel "How the Steel Was Tempered", which was published in more than 60 countries around the world.

Important dates

  • 1937 — Opening of the museum in the writer's private rooms.
  • 1938 — An exhibition pavilion with a literary exposition "The Life and Work of N. Ostrovsky" was built.
  • 1956 — The building of the Literary Department of the museum was built.
  • 1972 — The third historical and literary exposition "The Life and Work of N. Ostrovsky" was opened.
  • 1981 — The exposition of the family half of the Ostrovsky house was opened.

Current state

Today, the N. Ostrovsky House-Museum is a federal cultural heritage site. Since January 26, 2023, the memorial house has been temporarily closed for repair and restoration work. However, residents and visitors of the city can visit the Literary Department of the museum, which houses the permanent exhibitions “Literary Sochi” and “The Life and Work of N. A. Ostrovsky”, as well as temporary exhibitions from its own and borrowed funds.
