Located in the Central District of Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, at the beginning of Kurortny Prospekt, next to the main entrance to the Riviera Park.

History of creation

Construction of the monument began in 1974, but it was opened only on May 8, 1995, for the 50th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The monument is a steel arch, at the foot of which are marble and granite figures of doctors, nurses and the wounded.

Authors:

  • Sculptor: Daniil Ryabichev (Moscow)
  • Architects: V.A. Nesterov (Moscow), Yu.V. Lvov (Sochi)
  • Completion of the work: Sculptor A. Ryabichev (1995)

Description

The monument is a 20-meter-high steel arch symbolizing the road to life, and a small fountain in front of it. Under the arch are three sculptures: a surgeon, a nurse, and a soldier. The soldier symbolizes all the soldiers saved by doctors during the war, and the medical workers symbolize all the doctors who selflessly worked in those years. The high jets of the fountain create the illusion of living sculptures. Around the monument there is a garden with trees and flower beds, symbolizing the continuation of life.

Significance

During the war, Sochi became the main hospital of the country. Sanatoriums were re-qualified as hospitals and accepted more than 335 thousand wounded and sick soldiers, many of whom were returned to the front. The contribution of the city's medical workers was highly appreciated - in 1980 Sochi was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree.
