Description
Lake Elton is an amazing natural formation in the north of the Caspian lowland and is the largest mineral lake in Europe by area. The name of the lake probably comes from the Mongolian (Kalmyk) “Altyn-Nor” - golden bottom, which was proposed by the naturalist P. S. Pallas in 1773. There is also a version about the origin of the name in honor of the English lieutenant John Elton, a participant in the Orenburg expedition.
Elton has been known since the time of Ivan the Terrible, when regular salt mining began on its salt lakes. In 1747, a commission for the extraction of salt at Lake Elton was established, which indicates the importance of this deposit.
Lake Elton is not only an important site in terms of the history of salt mining, but also a unique natural place. Its area varies, but on average it is about 152 square kilometers, with a length of about 18 kilometers and a width of about 14 kilometers. It is one of the deepest salt lakes in the world, with a depth of up to 1.5 meters in early spring and decreasing to 10 centimeters in late summer due to evaporation of water and increased salt content.
Elton is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, which gives it unique properties and attractiveness for tourists. The water of the lake is rich in mineral salts such as bromine, boron, sodium, magnesium and calcium, which makes it a natural pharmacy and attractive for lovers of a healthy lifestyle and wellness treatments.
Lake Elton not only surprises with its natural beauty, but also provides opportunities for various types of active recreation and leisure. Visitors can enjoy mud wraps on its shores and stroll along the mirror-like surface of the water. Other outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking and trekking are also available around the lake.
Lake Elton is not only a natural wonder, but also a historically significant place that is worth visiting to see the amazing combination of nature and history.
