Description

At the entrance to the village of Peschanka, Sovetsky district, there is a mass grave in which the defenders of Stalingrad rest. The exact number of people buried here is still unknown, but of the total, only 120 people have been identified. On the northern outskirts of the village there is also another mass grave, where in 1983 a monument was erected, made in the form of an obelisk with a bas-relief of a soldier in a helmet, the work of the sculptor Goncharov. Again, only 120 people have been officially identified, and the exact number of those buried remains unknown.

On January 22, 1943, the famous sniper Maxim Passar, one of the most effective snipers of the Battle of Stalingrad, who killed more than 200 enemy soldiers and officers, died in a battle in the Peschanka area. His feat became a symbol of courage and bravery.

On January 25, 1943, also in the battle near Peschanka, liaison Maxim Fefilov, who led the company after the death of the commander, was able to break through to enemy positions and successfully completed the attack. In this battle, more than 100 German soldiers and officers were killed, and more than 200 were captured.

Local residents, including students and teachers of local school No. 114 and TOS, are caring for the monument to all victims of the Battle of Stalingrad and three mass graves. Every year, the Austrian delegation also contributes to the care of these memorials, maintaining their international significance and preserving the memory of the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War.
