Description
Stolbichi is an impressive steep wall on the banks of the Volga, consisting of yellowish-gray flasks, formed in the Paleogene era. This natural landmark, divided into ten high towers, has a height of up to 50-55 meters and is a natural monument of federal significance.
Stolbichi are located on the territory of the Shcherbakovsky natural park and stretch along the coast for 200 meters. Before the creation of the reservoir, contact layers of Cretaceous and Paleogene sediments were exposed in this place.
This unique object attracts the attention of both tourists and nature researchers. Stolbichi participated in the regional stage of the "Miracle of Russia 2012" competition.
The first mention of Stolbichi is found in the diary of the German traveler and ambassador to Muscovy Adam Olearius, who sailed along the Volga in 1636. In his entry, he describes the impressive view of Stolbichi, calling it “Pillar Mountain”.
Russian Emperor Peter I also mentions Stolbichi in his diary during the first Azov campaign in 1695, noting their meeting while sailing along the river.
Artists brothers Grigory and Nikanor Chernetsov in 1838 traveled along the Volga in order to depict it. They described and drew Stolbichi in detail, expressing their admiration for the natural beauty of this place.
Their notes on the fragility and unusualness of the Stolbichs, made of fragile stone, which constantly changes its appearance due to collapses, have been preserved.
The great Russian poet Apollo of Corinth also describes in his poems his impressions of what he saw, comparing Stolbichi to a ghost town over the Volga.
Stolbich, with its unique natural architecture, continues to delight and attract the attention of people from all over the world.
