Description
Gagarin Field, located at the landing site of Yuri Gagarin after his historic flight into space, is a memorial complex that was recognized as a “landmark site of federal significance” in 2012. This complex is included in the “Park of Space Conquerors”, the first stage of which was opened in April 2021.
The first monuments at Gagarin's landing site were temporary and included plywood signs, photographs of the astronaut and a model of the future stele. In 1965, a memorial monument was erected - a stele depicting a rocket taking off, which is a smaller copy of the monument at VDNKh in Moscow. In 1966, an asphalt highway was laid to Gagarin’s landing site, and five years later a time capsule was laid under the obelisk.
On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of Gagarin’s flight, a sculptural monument was erected on the site of the installed obelisk, and bas-reliefs with images of Korolev and Tsiolkovsky were placed on the square in front of it. The “Cosmonauts Gallery” was also created, which includes bas-reliefs of twelve astronauts. In 2020, the memorial complex was restored and completed on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of Gagarin’s flight.
Yuri Gagarin's flight into space
Pilot-cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin went into outer space on the Vostok spacecraft to fly around the Earth in 108 minutes. This flight was decisive in the space race between the USSR and the USA, and the stakes were extremely high. Despite the lack of time to prepare, Gagarin courageously decided to take this step, although there was a danger that he might not return from space.
Gagarin was chosen from four candidates, and he prepared for the flight for a year. His high stress tolerance and self-control were especially noted. The chief designer of rocket and space systems, Academician Sergei Korolev, was responsible for the preparation, organization and implementation of this historic flight. Throughout the flight, Gagarin kept in touch with Korolev, describing the beauty of the Earth: “Attention! I see the horizon of the Earth. It’s such a beautiful halo. First, a rainbow from the very surface of the Earth and down. Very beautiful.”
After a 108-minute flight, at 10:55 Gagarin landed on a potato field in the Saratov region. The first to see him were the forester’s wife and her five-year-old granddaughter, who were planting potatoes. They remember this day in detail. Gagarin was also noticed by collective farmers and tractor drivers, who helped him take off his spacesuit and took him to the village. Subsequently, Gagarin had a telephone conversation with Nikita Khrushchev.
Villagers still remember Gagarin's landing and characterize him as a modest, polite and resilient cosmonaut. None of them had any doubt that Major Gagarin had indeed returned from space.
