Description
The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in the village of Perevoloki, has a rich history, dating back to its foundation around 1680. This historical object arose during the life of the Zhiguli Cossack freemen, when boats were transported here between the Volga and Usa, significantly shortening the journey along the river.
The temple was built at the beginning of the 18th century and towered over the surrounding areas, visible from many kilometers along the Volga. Russian merchants, passing by, often came here, praying for prosperity in trade matters and making donations for the improvement of the temple.
In 1936, the church was closed and destroyed, but already in the same year, at the foot of the hill where the temple stood, a spring appeared, which local residents called “Tears of the Virgin Mary.” In the 90s of the last century, thanks to the efforts of priest Vladimir Semeny and local residents, a new brick church was erected here in honor of the Intercession of the Mother of God.
The source “Tears of the Virgin Mary” was consecrated in 1999, and now every year a water prayer service is held here. According to legend, under the destroyed temple there is an underground tunnel, used in ancient times by robbers and fishermen for secret movements. On the initiative of Father Victor, the restoration and improvement of the “Tears of the Virgin Mary” source was carried out with funds from the government of the Samara region in 2006.
Although the Soviet authorities carried out punitive operations against church parishioners, there are no official documents about executions inside the church in 1936. However, local legends and testimonies from residents leave many questions about the fate of the temple in those difficult times.
