Description

The monument to V.N. Tatishchev, the founder of the city of Tolyatti, is an equestrian statue installed on the banks of the Volga River. This monument, taken under protection as an object of monumental art, is of historical value for the city.

Vasily Nikitich Tatishchev (1686-1750) was an outstanding Russian historian and statesman. He took part in military campaigns, managed state-owned factories in the Urals and founded several cities, including Yekaterinburg, Perm, Chelyabinsk, Orenburg and Orsk. Tatishchev was also a versatile scientist who wrote many works on the history and geography of Russia, including “The History of the Russian State from Ancient Times,” and also compiled the first Russian encyclopedic dictionary.

The city of Togliatti was founded by Tatishchev in 1737 as Stavropol, and a monument to him was erected on the banks of the reservoir to recall his role in the founding of the city. The monument is made in the form of a stylobate, masonry walls with protruding polygonal towers, inside of which there is a base for an equestrian statue. The height of the pedestal is 14 meters, and the sculpture itself is 7.5 meters. The material for the sculpture is limestone and bronze.

The statue of Tatishchev is located on the observation deck, providing a wonderful view of the surrounding area. The architectural solution also includes a staircase with lanterns in the form of stylized fortress turrets.

In 1998, the monument was unveiled on the banks of the Volga River by the then mayor of Togliatti, Sergei Zhilkin. The design and construction of the monument was completed in less than two years. The monument has become a symbol of the city and a reminder of its historical roots.
