Description
Lake Shartash, located in the Kirovsky district of Yekaterinburg, is one of the main natural attractions of the city. Its name comes from Turkic words that can be interpreted as “lake of yellow stone” or “swamp lake”. The water in the lake was formed about a million years ago, and since then it has become a place where traces of human activity can be observed since the late Neolithic era.
The lake has an oval shape, the average depth is about 3 meters, and the maximum reaches 4.7 meters. Its coastline, about 12 km long, is indented in various shapes, and on its bottom one can find sapropel deposits, significantly contaminated with heavy metals from the granite quarry. Despite this, the lake is home to a variety of fish, including perch, roach, crucian carp, tench, carp, ripus and gudgeon.
A beautiful pine forest grows around the lake, which makes this place ideal for recreation for Yekaterinburg residents. Here you can spend time walking, cycling, and in the summer, swimming in the lake. Shartash has become a popular place for rest and relaxation away from the bustle of the city.
It is important to note that Lake Shartash has become an object of special protection and is recognized as a natural monument of regional significance. However, it has also become a matter of concern due to its pollution and the threat to its continued existence. Reconstruction of the Shartash Forest Park is planned, which will likely help preserve and improve this important natural place for citizens and visitors.
