Description
The monument to the black hussars was unveiled in Samara on September 7, 2018, next to the district officers’ house. The Fifth Alexandria Hussar Regiment, belonging to Her Imperial Majesty the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, was redeployed to Samara in 1910. During the First World War, the hussars left the city. The distinctive feature of the regiment was the black uniform and the symbol of immortality - “Adam’s head”: a skull and crossbones. Famous historical figures served in the regiment, such as Nikolai Gumilyov, Mikhail Bulgakov, Carl Gustav Mannerheim, as well as representatives of the noble families of Samara, princes Urusov, Karamzin, Alasheyev.
The monument was made of bronze by Samara sculptor Ivan Melnikov. Its height without the pedestal is about 2.5 meters. The prototype for the sculpture was a real historical character - Samara nobleman Konstantin Nikolaevich Batyushkov. The monument is dedicated both to the soldier and the fifth Alexandrian Hussar Regiment, in which Batyushkov served.
The sculpture depicts a hussar in full dress, leading his horse and returning home from the war to Samara. The monument was erected with private funds from sponsors.
The city also plans to install another memorial - a memorial to the Alexandrian Hussars. This will be done by a non-profit organization, which will receive a subsidy from the reserve fund of the Samara region government. The funds will be used to design, manufacture and install the memorial by November 1, 2022.
