Description
The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, also known as the Polish Church, is a significant Catholic church in Samara. Its construction began in the early 1890s at the initiative of the Samara Catholic community, predominantly composed of Poles. Initially, a wooden church was built, and then in 1902, construction of a stone building began according to the design by Moscow architect Foma Bogdanovich. The construction was completed by 1906, and the church was consecrated on February 12, 1906.
During the Soviet era, the church was closed, looted, and in 1941, it housed a local history museum. However, in 1991, the building was returned to the Catholic community, and by 1996, the church was restored and reconsecrated. Today, various activities take place in the parish, including catechesis, ecumenical meetings, Bible study groups, as well as concerts of spiritual and classical music.
The church is built in the Neo-Gothic style and has a cruciform shape with a transept and three naves. The facade is adorned with pinnacles, and the towers reach a height of 47 meters. In its original form, the church was richly decorated, housing an organ inside. Currently, a fresco-copy of Salvador Dali's painting "Christ of St. John of the Cross" is displayed in the altar.
