The sculpture "Lady with a Racket", installed in Pushkinsky Square in Samara on September 8, 2012, is a symbol of the history of tennis in the region. She portrays Maria von Barader, the wife of the famous entrepreneur Alfred von Vacano, who was the founder of the brewery known today as Zhigulevsky. Maria von Barader played a key role in the development of tennis in Samara and the region.
It was in the Samara province that the development of tennis began, and it was here that this sport gained enormous popularity. In 1912, the first tennis courts were built on the site of Pushkin Square, where games were regularly held. On September 8 of the same year, the first competition for the von Vacano Cup was held, which was an important event for tennis in the region.
The sculpture "Lady with a Racket" was installed in honor of the centenary of the first tennis tournament in Samara. Its authors were Nikolai and Alexander Kuklev, and the initiative to install it belongs to the Samara Region Tennis Federation.
The opening ceremony of the sculpture gathered a huge number of high-ranking guests of the city and region. Following the opening, a tennis tournament was held in which the event's honored guests took part, continuing the tradition and perpetuating the city's connection with this wonderful sport.
