Description
The monument to Vasily Chapaev is one of the most expressive and beautiful monuments in Samara. Installed in November 1932, it was dedicated to the hero of the Civil War in honor of the 15th anniversary of the October Revolution. The monument was placed on the square in front of the Samara Academic Drama Theater named after Gorky, which is now called Chapaev Square.
The sculptural composition of the monument has impressive dimensions: the height of the monument itself is 10 meters, and the base measures 17 by 22 meters. The entire composition is made of bronze, which adds majesty and significance to it. The pedestal consists of two platforms, on the top of which there is a sculpture of Vasily Chapaev and his fighters.
The authors of this outstanding sculptural work were the architect I. Langbard and the sculptor M. Manizer, known for his works dedicated to outstanding historical figures. The son of Vasily Chapaev posed for the sculptor, which added special depth and authenticity to the work.
It is interesting to note that the sculpture of Vasily Chapaev caused such an impression on S.M. Kirov that it was decided to cast an exact copy for installation in Leningrad. Thus, a second monument appeared, which can be seen on the square in front of the building of the Budyonny Military Academy of Communications in St. Petersburg. This fact speaks of the significance and popularity of the monument to Vasily Chapaev as a symbol of heroism and struggle.
