The Samara Academic Drama Theater named after M. Gorky is one of the oldest drama theaters in Russia and represents a significant part of the cultural heritage of the city of Samara. Its history goes back more than one and a half centuries.
The theater was founded in 1851, when Samara was given the status of a provincial city. At the beginning of its existence, it was located in a specially adapted house of the merchant Lebedev, and then in a wooden building. In 1888, a new stone theater building was built according to the design of the architect M. N. Chichagov, which became its main creative space.
The Samara Drama Theater named after M. Gorky went through various stages of development, artistic directors and actors changed, but always maintained a high level of creativity and attention to the quality of productions. He received the title of "academic" in 1977, and his name was given in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky in 1936.
The theater actively participates in theater festivals and tours both in Russia and abroad. Its repertoire includes both classical works and modern productions, attracting the attention of viewers with their relevance and artistic expressiveness.
