Description
The Red Forest (or Rudy Forest) is a unique territory adjacent to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and famous for its unusual nature. This forest became a symbol of the 1986 disaster, when emissions of radioactive dust led to its death. The pine trees that form the basis of this forest acquired a characteristic brown-red hue in just 30 minutes after the explosion.
Today, the Red Forest is being restored in the most incredible way - naturally. The pines here have become a kind of filter, trapping radioactive particles in their crowns and slowing down the process of removing pollution. This forest turned out to be not only a witness to a terrible tragedy, but also an example of the amazing vitality of nature.
Scientists distinguish four zones in this forest, depending on the degree of radiation damage. The most dangerous is the zone of complete death of conifers, where all the trees died and the entire forest looked as if it had burned down. However, green spots are already beginning to appear in this area - signs of the beginning of recovery.
In 2020, the Red Forest was under threat again - the fire raging in Chernobyl approached its borders. This unique natural site needs protection and attention in order to preserve its unique beauty and become a symbol not only of the disaster, but also of hope for recovery after it.
