Description

The monument to Salavat Yulaev, made by sculptor Soslanbek Tavasiev, is located in Ufa on the high bank of the Belaya River. This outstanding work of art, dedicated to the national hero of Bashkortostan, has become the calling card of the city and the republic.

History of creation

The monument was unveiled on November 17, 1967. Sculptor Soslanbek Dafaevich Tavasiev, who is a People's Artist of North Ossetia and Bashkortostan, worked on the creation of the monument for 30 years. The first model of the monument was made in life-size from plaster and completed by 1963. After discussions with experts in Moscow and official approval by the USSR Ministry of Culture, the model was delivered to Ufa and installed in the foyer of the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theater. Based on comments from local residents, the sculpture was finalized.

The main production of the monument was carried out at the Leningrad Monumentskulptura plant over the course of a month and a half. The monument is a figure of Salavat Yulaev on horseback, made of bronzed cast iron. It has only three support points, which makes it unique from an engineering point of view. A steel frame is installed inside the monument, which is reinforced with a reinforced concrete pedestal and passes through the figure of the rider and horse.

Features and Symbolism

The monument is 9.8 meters high and weighs 40 tons. Salavat Yulaev is depicted on horseback with a raised hand, in which he holds a whip with a loop. This gesture symbolizes a call to action and support for the people's uprising. The statue is made of bronzed cast iron, and the pedestal is faced with granite slabs. The area around the monument is landscaped and lined with colored slabs, fenced with an openwork metal grate.

Meaning and awards

The monument to Salavat Yulaev is the main sculptural landmark of Ufa and a symbol of the Republic of Bashkortostan. In 1970, Soslanbek Tavasiyev was awarded the USSR State Prize for the creation of this monument.

The monument is depicted on the coat of arms of Bashkortostan and is considered the largest equestrian statue in Europe. It embodies national pride and the memory of Salavat Yulaev, a famous poet and associate of Yemelyan Pugachev in the Peasant War.
