Description
For a long time, in the city of Orenburg there was a neglected park located in the area of Montazhnikov Street and Pobeda Avenue. This park was founded in 1976 on an area of 12 hectares. Initially, this green zone was located at the burial site of Japanese and German prisoners of war who were present in Orenburg during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period. In 1996-1997, the city municipality made a proposal for the possible installation of a memorial dedicated to the fallen prisoners of war on the territory of Orenburg. However, this proposal caused protest from local residents and veterans of the machine-building plant. As a result, the installation of the bas-relief and memorial plaque to the victims of the war took place only in the summer of 2008.
One of the most characteristic elements of the park is the symbolism in the form of a hammer and sickle, as well as a five-pointed star, installed in memory of those who fought for their homeland, as well as those who contributed to the home front. Between 2009 and 2011, trees in the park were cut down, which caused initial discontent among local residents, since some of them were planted in memory of Soviet and German soldiers. However, the park was reconstructed, old trees were cut down, and new ones were planted in their place. The park regularly hosts commemorative events, especially on the eve of May 9th. A monument dedicated to the children of war serves as a meeting place for local residents and veterans.
It is worth mentioning the name that the park bears. Since 1955, Leonid Alekseevich Guskov served as director of the Orenburg Machine-Building Plant. This is an outstanding figure in engineering, whose career extends from a simple design engineer to a plant manager. During his stay in Orenburg, he also served as a member of the bureau of the Orenburg Regional Committee of the CPSU.
