Description
The memorial complex in the Orenburg region, opened in 1989, became the first of its kind in Russia. In 2007, after military actions in the North Caucasus, the memorial underwent reconstruction, during which the names of those who perished in this conflict were immortalized on its plaques.
In the summer of 2018, a new reconstruction of the Memorial to Internationalist Soldiers began in the 50th Anniversary of the USSR Park, funded by the philanthropist Mikhail Konnov. The repair work affected not only the monument itself but also its pedestal. A new memorial plaque with the names of the servicemen who died in Syria was also installed. A small fountain previously located at the base of the monument was removed as it had been non-functional for a long time.
The memorial complex, situated in the 50th Anniversary of the USSR Park on Brestskaya Street in the city of Orenburg, consists of several compositions. Dedicated to the memory of internationalist soldiers who died in various armed conflicts, the monument symbolizes loyalty to the international duty. The main part of the composition consists of two tall stone obelisks connected by the "handshake" of two massive stone hands. At the base of the monument, there is a plaque with the names of the fallen and missing internationalist soldiers. Behind the obelisk, granite monoliths with marble plaques are arranged, also bearing the names of the fighters.
The opening of the memorial complex took place on May 5, 2007, in a solemn atmosphere. Representatives of the government, city administration, the organization "Combat Brotherhood," and veterans of military operations participated in the construction of the memorial.
