Description
The Kazan Cathedral in Orenburg was an important cultural and architectural symbol of the city, built in the neo-Byzantine style in 1888-1894. The temple served as the cathedral of the Orenburg diocese and was one of the main objects of the city.
The cathedral was a magnificent structure with a prominent dome in the middle and four bell towers. Inside it was richly decorated with paintings and ornaments. In addition, two chapels were built in the cathedral and an exact copy of the icon of Our Lady of Kazan was kept.
In the early 1930s, during the period of active demolition of religious buildings in the Soviet Union, it was decided to destroy the Kazan Cathedral. Explosions began in 1932, and the temple was finally destroyed in 1936. A memorial sign was erected on the site of the destroyed cathedral.
In 2001, in another district of Orenburg, a new cathedral in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was consecrated. This cathedral, built in a different style taking into account ancient Russian traditions, can be considered as the successor to the lost Kazan Cathedral.
