Photos of Bolshoy Shikhan

Description

Bolshoy Shikhan is a geological and geomorphological nature monument in the Kurmanayevsky District of Orenburg Region. The remnant hill lies within the Volzhsky rural settlement, 5.5 kilometers northeast of the village of Semyonovka, and rises to 262.8 meters above sea level. The protected area covers 5 hectares.

Geology

Bolshoy Shikhan (Russian for "Big Hillock") is an erosional remnant shaped as a rounded hill with a flat top. The plateau-like summit is a fragment of a stratified plain preserved by a hard layer of rock that shielded softer layers beneath from erosion. The surface is made up of rocks of the Volgian stage of the Upper Jurassic. Such landforms are monuments to weathering processes spanning tens of millions of years: water and wind gradually wore down the surrounding plain, while the patch with more resistant rock survived and turned into an elevation. Bolshoy Shikhan is considered a reference example of remnant weathering landforms and landscape features of western Orenburg Region.

Nature

The summit and slopes of the remnant preserve a patch of rocky petrophyte-forb-grass steppe — vegetation that takes hold on outcrops of dense rock and stony soils. Such steppe communities on shikhans (isolated hills) differ from the surrounding ploughed land and retain species adapted specifically to the stony substrate.

Protection

Bolshoy Shikhan received the status of a regional nature monument under a 1998 order of the Orenburg Region administration, No. 505-r, "On Nature Monuments of Orenburg Region." The status was later confirmed by a decree of the regional government, No. 121-p of February 25, 2015, "On Regional Nature Monuments of Orenburg Region." A special protection regime applies to the site: the remnant's geological structure and the steppe vegetation on its summit are protected from economic activity. All regional protected natural areas are overseen by the state institution "Directorate of Specially Protected Natural Areas of Orenburg Region," which can be consulted for current visiting restrictions.

Getting there

Bolshoy Shikhan is located in the Kurmanayevsky District of Orenburg Region, 5.5 kilometers northeast of the village of Semyonovka. The route runs through the village itself and then follows a dirt road toward the remnant. The nearest settlement serves as a reference point for the route: it is about 5.5 kilometers in a straight line from Semyonovka to the summit of Bolshoy Shikhan.
