Description

Atamanskaya Gora (Атаманская гора, Ataman Hill) is an upland on the right bank of the Samara River a few kilometres northeast of Buzuluk, in the Buzuluksky District of Orenburg Oblast. It is a spur of the Obshchy Syrt hills and a geological natural monument of about 120 hectares. The hill is known for two things: ancient rocks come to the surface here, and its top gives a view over Buzuluk and the Samara floodplain.

What to see

The main sight of Atamanskaya Gora is the outcrops of maroon-brown sandstones and conglomerates on its slopes and top. This is the type section of the Lower Triassic Buzuluk Formation, the reference geologists use to describe these deposits. Today the formation is assigned to the Blumental Group.

The second large outcrop is the steep side of a road cutting on the Buzuluk – Buguruslan highway. Up to 60 metres of rock can be seen in it: red sandstones with layers of mudstone. The slopes of the hill are cut by deep gullies, an example of strong erosion on coarse Lower Triassic rocks.

From the hill you can see Buzuluk, the wooded Samara floodplain, the railway and the neighbouring hills, with a small lake hidden among the trees below. Lake Sineshchekovo lies not far from the hill. There are many springs around, and popular local ski routes run nearby.

History of the name

A local legend says that a band of robbers led by an ataman hid in an old, half-collapsed cave on the hill. Historians do not confirm this. Another version links the name to the fact that the land belonged to the Cossack administration.

At the foot of the hill, on the grounds of a correctional colony, the walls of the former Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) monastery survive. In the 19th century it stood by the Atamansky spring on the road from Buzuluk to Buguruslan.

Getting there

The hill stands by the Buzuluk – Buguruslan highway where it leaves the city to the northeast, next to the correctional colony. The cutting with the outcrop is visible right from the road; the top is reached on foot up the slopes.

Good to know

The sandstone of the hill is weak and crumbles, so entering the old caves is dangerous. Unfortunately, litter left by visitors is found on the top.
