Photos of Rodnikovye Obryvy

Description

Rodnikovye Obryvy (Spring Cliffs) is a geological nature monument in the Abdulinsky district of Orenburg Region, 1 km northeast of the village of Rodnikovka, on the left bank of the stream of the same name. The monument covers 8 hectares and consists of a series of nearly vertical cliffs stretching about 2 km, where Permian-period deposits are exposed at the surface.

Geology

The cliffs are considered a reference section of Kazanian-stage deposits. The two most significant bluffs clearly show a distinctive, so-called Abdulinsky type section of the lower unit of the upper Kazanian substage. Its special feature is the chalk-like appearance of the rocks: not only the limestones and marls but also the sandstones on calcareous cement have a pale, chalky colour. In some thin layers true writing chalk occurs, almost indistinguishable from the rock of the same name from the Cretaceous period.

The bedding is horizontal, with layers ranging from massive to thin. Among the pale rocks there are interlayers of red-brown and brown mudstone. The sandstones show a greenish tint over the pale base colour, while the limestones and marls have a bluish tint. Some limestone varieties are porous, cavernous and strongly karstified. The visible thickness of the section, combined across the different cliffs, is at least 30 metres.

Springs

From the lowest cliff (downstream along the Rodnikovka), springs emerge; they are designated as a separate hydrogeological nature monument, the Hanging Springs of Rodnikovka, established on 21 May 1998. The water falls from a height of almost 8 metres in cascades. It is hydrocarbonate water with a predominance of magnesium and high alkalinity (pH 8.36). Over time, onyx-like flowstone crusts and calcite breccias form on the stones beneath the springs.

Getting there

Rodnikovye Obryvy lie in the Abdulinsky district of Orenburg Region, about 1 km southwest of the Orenburg–Kazan highway, near the village of Rodnikovka. The site is reachable only by car on local district roads; no public transport runs to the monument itself.
