Gora Goryun
Description
Gora Goryun (Mount Goryun) is a hill about 151 meters high on the right bank of the Ural River, in the Perevolotsky District of Orenburg Oblast, Russia. It lies two kilometers northeast of the village of Rychkovka and roughly 26 kilometers in a straight line from the district center. The slope drops steeply toward the river, and the summit offers a panoramic view of the Ural valley. The site is protected as a regional landscape nature monument covering 14 hectares, with a special conservation regime in place.
Geology
The hill is built of rocks from the Lower Tatarian substage of the Permian system. About 20 meters below the summit, in the middle part of the slope, sandstone outcrops are exposed — mostly red-colored, with one greenish-gray layer. Along the edge of the ravine there are slabs of light-gray limestone, which typically occur as thin interlayers within Tatarian deposits. This structure is clearly visible from the path leading to the cliff edge, making the hill a notable geological outcrop in the Ural valley.
History and legends
On top of the hill lies a Cuman (Polovtsian) burial mound. According to old residents of nearby Rychkovka, a stone statue (balbal) found on such a mound was once set up near one of the houses in the village.
A legend connects the hill to a fugitive associate of Yemelyan Pugachev named Tukmak, who supposedly dug a cave under the hill and lived there, grieving over his fate — which, by this account, gave the hill its name (goryun means "one who grieves" in Russian). Locals confirm that the cave did once exist, but it was filled in for safety reasons, so it can no longer be found on the slope today.
The village of Rychkovka itself was founded in 1746 as a military Cossack outpost on land granted to academician Pyotr Rychkov; an earlier name, Tokmakovka, is also recorded. In September 1793, during the Pugachev rebellion, insurgents stopped at a nearby farmstead, destroyed it, burned the buildings and drove off the livestock. In January 1919 the 212th Moscow Regiment of the 24th Simbirsk Iron Division passed through Rychkovka on its way to liberate Orenburg.
Getting there
Gora Goryun is located next to the village of Rychkovka in Perevolotsky District, about 26 kilometers in a straight line from the district center, the settlement of Perevolotsky. It can be reached through the village itself, from which the foot of the hill is about 2 kilometers away. Since the site holds the status of a nature monument, visitors should be mindful of its special conservation regime.
