Gora Krutaya
Description
Gora Krutaya (Steep Mountain) is the highest point of the Grachyovsky district of Orenburg Oblast, standing 333.1 metres above sea level. It lies in the Aleksandrovsky rural settlement, 3 km northwest of the village of Yakovlevka. On a clear day this landscape viewpoint offers a view of the surrounding steppe for 20–25 km — such remnant cuesta hills serve as natural lookout points across the flat steppe of the region.
Relief and geology
Gora Krutaya is a classic erosional cuesta — an asymmetric ridge formed by uneven erosion of gently tilted rock layers. Its slopes are gentle and sloping to the west and north, and steep, almost cliff-like, to the south and east. The mountain is built of Upper Permian red-coloured sandstones and mudstones with interbeds of grey-coloured sandstones and limestones. On sparsely vegetated, bare patches of the slopes these differently coloured layers are visible right at the surface, which makes it possible to read the mountain's geological structure without digging.
Vegetation
The slopes of the mountain are covered with sparse feather-grass steppe, a vegetation type typical of the uplands of the Cis-Ural region and dominated by tussock grasses. Among the grasses and shrubs here grow thickets of two-spike ephedra, low almond, steppe cherry and Russian broom — species typical of stony steppe slopes. On the eastern, more humid slope, the steppe gives way to a low-growing stand of aspen with an admixture of birch.
Protected status
Gora Krutaya is a nature monument of regional significance covering 90 hectares, with a special protection regime in place. The land user of the territory is the Volna Revolyutsii state farm. Economic activity on the nature monument is restricted: hunting here is either fully banned or restricted by species and season, and requires a separate permit from the territory's administration.
Getting there
The mountain lies in the Grachyovsky district of Orenburg Oblast, in the Aleksandrovsky rural settlement. The nearest village is Yakovlevka, about 3 km southeast of the mountain. Like most nature monuments of Orenburg Oblast, Gora Krutaya has no tourist infrastructure — it is first of all a natural and landscape site, notable for its viewpoint and its distinctive cuesta geology.
