Description
Gamaleevsky Pine Forest (Гамалеевский сосновый бор) is a man-made forest on the eastern outskirts of the village of Gamaleevka in the Sorochinsk urban district, Orenburg region. The forest covers 321 hectares. It is listed in the "Green Book of Orenburg Region: Inventory of Objects of Orenburg Natural Heritage" as a forestry monument from the early 20th century.
History
The forest was planted in 1911 for a practical reason: sandy soil was encroaching on the village, and residents decided to stop it with pine plantings. On the advice of an official from St. Petersburg, the village elder gathered a meeting where a petition was drafted asking the authorities to provide planting stock. The petition was approved, and in spring pine seedlings were brought to Gamaleevka and planted by the villagers themselves.
The pines took root well in the poor sandy soil and soon halted the sand's movement toward the village. Over time, grasses and shrubs grew up along the forest's edges. Today's forest is the work of the ancestors of Gamaleevka's current residents, more than a century old.
Nature
Besides pine, the forest also contains birch, aspen and, more rarely, oak. In the open Orenburg steppe surrounding the Sorochinsk urban district, a continuous pine stand of this size is unusual, which is why it was included in the region's natural heritage inventory. The forest protects the soil from wind erosion and remains a place where the air is noticeably cleaner than in the open steppe around it — which is why locals believe that people living near the forest suffer less often from respiratory illness and live longer.
What to see
Paths run through the forest for walks and for watching plants and animals, and in winter people ski along the frosty trails. Open clearings on the forest's edges, overgrown with grass and shrubs, are suitable for family outings and picnics at any time of year.
Getting there
Gamaleevka lies in the Sorochinsk urban district of Orenburg region, off the region's main highways. The village can be reached by bus or minibus from the Sorochinsk bus station on 2-ya Alleya Street: the trip takes about 20 minutes, buses run daily, including Saturdays, with the first departure at 06:10 and the last at 18:40. By car, it is about 170 kilometers from Orenburg to Sorochinsk along the highway through Podgorodnyaya Pokrovka, Kholodnye Klyuchi and Perevolotsky — a drive of roughly an hour and a half — with a short stretch remaining from Sorochinsk to the eastern edge of Gamaleevka, where the forest begins.
