Zolotoy Klyuch Tract and Spring

Description

The Zolotoy Klyuch tract and spring (Урочище Золотой Ключ и родник) is a regional landscape-hydrogeological natural monument in the Orenburg Region, in the Perevolotsky District. It lies four kilometers south of the village of Donetskoye, at the bottom of the Tatishchensky ravine, next to the federal Samara-Orenburg highway. The name joins the two features protected as one natural monument: a wooded ravine, or "tract," and a spring rising within it.

Nature

The tract occupies a forest that reaches the highway at the top of the ravine. In the steppe-dominated Perevolotsky District, a surviving patch of forest like this is itself a rarity, which is why the whole ravine is protected, not only the spring. The tree stand is formed by oak and aspen, with birch less common. The shrub layer consists of dog rose, broom, almond cherry, meadowsweet, and Siberian pea shrub. Under the forest canopy grow plants typical of oak groves: lily of the valley, lungwort, lesser celandine, windflower, and corydalis. The object received its natural-monument status as a combination of a forested ravine and a groundwater outlet, which is why its name joins both the ravine and the spring.

The spring

The spring at the foot of the ravine drains the aquifer of the Tatarian stage of Permian deposits: water that has accumulated underground for millions of years reaches the surface here. The outlet is fitted with a metal box and a pipe, making it easy to draw water. The spring has notable recreational value for the district: cars traveling along the Samara-Orenburg highway stop by it, and the ravine with its spring is a popular spot for a short rest along the way.

History

The Zolotoy Klyuch tract and spring is classified as a specially protected natural area of regional importance. In August 2023 the territory of the natural monument was improved as part of the "Springs of Orenburg Region" campaign, supported by the Orenburg branch of Sberbank: the approach to the spring was cleared and the surrounding area was put in order.

Getting there

From Orenburg, take the P-239 highway toward the Perevolotsky District. Before reaching the district center of Perevolotsky, turn left at the sign for the village of Donetskoye. Drive through Donetskoye heading south; the tract and spring are located in the forest of the Tatishchensky ravine, four kilometers from the village.
