Description

The historical monument "Russian Gate" in Anapa is the eastern gate of the Turkish fortress, built in 1781-83. The gate is one of the few surviving fragments of this fortress and an important cultural heritage site of Russia.

History of the fortress

The Anapa fortress was built by the Turks by order of Sultan Abdul-Hamid in 1783. Its fortifications consisted of seven bastions connected by curtain walls and three gates. The fortress walls, 3.2 km long and 8 meters high, surrounded the territory of Anapa, protecting it from attacks. In addition, a ditch up to 4 meters deep and 16 meters wide was dug in front of the walls. The Russian Gate is the only surviving fragment of the fortress. In 1854, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Adrianople Peace, a marble plaque with the inscription "Russian Gate. 1854" was installed on the gate. In 1913, the remains of soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish wars were reburied in the gates. At the same time, a stele with the image of the Order "For the Caucasus" and a memorial plate made of red marble with the inscription "To the soldiers who died at the walls of Anapa" were installed.

Restoration and current state

In 1995-96, restoration work was carried out on the gates, during which a roof was installed on the gates and the stele was restored. Next to the gates are two cannons symbolizing the power of Russian weapons. The gates are a cultural heritage site and a monument of Ottoman military architecture of the 18th century.

The meaning of the Russian Gates

Today, the Russian Gates are one of the main attractions of Anapa and a symbol of the historical center of the city. The place attracts many tourists, including history buffs, and is an important element of the cultural heritage of the region.
