Description
The memorial complex at the old city cemetery in Anapa is a significant object dedicated to the memory of the victims of fascism and the soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War. It includes two mass graves: “Mass grave of Soviet soldiers and civilians of the city of Anapa, tortured by the fascist occupiers, 1942-1943” and “Mass grave of Soviet soldiers, 1943”, where more than 200 people are buried.
The central element of the composition is a rectangular stele, lined with marble tiles. The inscription is engraved on the stele: “To the victims of fascism 1941-1945.” Around the stele there are marble slabs with the names of those buried, as well as the tomb of the unknown soldier.
The memorial complex is supplemented with a memorial sign “From the Children of War”, made by sculptor V.P. Polyakov, which was installed in 1996. In 2010, for the 65th anniversary of the Victory, slabs were added with the names of newly identified buried soldiers from hospitals and the names of Anapa residents who went missing on the war fronts.
The memorial complex carries historical value as an object of material culture created to perpetuate the memory of those killed during the war. Its architectural and artistic design, as well as the mass burial, make it an important element of the urban landscape and a symbol of memory.
