Description

The Phanagorian fortress, located on the territory of the modern village of Taman, is a significant historical monument reflecting the rich military and cultural history of the region. Erected at the end of the 18th century, this fortress is associated with the name of the famous Russian commander Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov.

Construction history and significance

After the capture of Taman by Russian troops under the leadership of Suvorov, it was decided to build a defensive structure to protect against possible Turkish attacks. Construction of the fortress began in 1794, and the completion of the work is also associated with the name of Suvorov, who personally supervised the process and visited Taman four times. However, due to an error in the name of the city, the fortress was named Phanagorian, despite the fact that at that time Taman was already called “swamp” in Turkish.

Structure and remains of the fortress

The fortress was a powerful defensive structure. Today, all that remains of it are high earthen ramparts dug by Suvorov’s soldiers to defend the village. The fortress was destroyed during the Crimean campaign and was never rebuilt. However, on satellite images you can see the original shape of the fortification - in the form of a star.

Memorial and surviving artifacts

A memorial was created on the site of the fortress, including monuments to outstanding historical figures associated with Taman. Among them are busts of Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov and Admiral Fedor Fedorovich Ushakov, who commanded the Black Sea Fleet and won the Battle of Kerch in 1790. Thanks to this victory, the Turks were unable to take possession of the Sea of Azov and the Kuban lands, including Taman.

A small chapel was also erected near the fortress in honor of Admiral Ushakov, who was canonized. Opposite the fortress is the Chateau Taman tasting room and a grape processing plant.

Archaeological finds

During the construction of the fortress, numerous artifacts were discovered, including the famous Tmutarakan stone, which was originally used as a threshold to enter the barracks. It was this find that made it possible to identify Taman as the center of the Tmutarakan principality and finally resolve disputes about the location of the legendary Tmutarakan.

Current status

Today, the ramparts, overgrown with grass, serve as a historical and cultural monument, attracting tourists and researchers. The ramparts of the Phanagorian fortress are a place where you can stroll, enjoying the view of the coast and feeling the breath of history. The best way to learn about the rich history of this place is to visit it with a guide, who will tell you about the fighting and life in the fortress.

Conclusion

The Phanagorian fortress in Taman is an important monument to the military history of Russia. Its ruined ramparts and memorials remind of significant events and prominent personalities associated with the history of the region. This is a place where history and modernity intersect, creating a unique space for studying and understanding the past.
