Description

On the Taman Peninsula, in the center of the village of Taman, there is a unique hydraulic monument dating back to the times of the Ottoman Empire. This monument is known as the Turkish Fountain, also called the Turkish Wells. Its age is estimated to be several centuries, and although the exact date of construction could not be determined, it is believed that it was built about 300 years ago.

Description and design

The Turkish fountain is an artificially created source of water located at the bottom of a dry lake. The reservoir was a place of settlements and temporary stops for ancient sailors; the ancient city of Hermonassa was even founded here. Today it is a sandy depression with a fountain in the center.

The principle of operation of the fountain remained unclear for a long time. It was originally thought that the water came from an artesian well or was collected using a system of ceramic pipes that could collect rainwater. However, it later turned out that the fountain operates on a condensation type principle. Humid air from the sea condenses in pipes, which, thanks to deep burial and the pottery manufacturing method, do not heat above 20°C. As a result, moisture is formed, and the fountain fills with water, even in the heat.

Historical and cultural aspects

The Turkish Fountain has significant historical significance. According to legend, it was built by the young man Rahim, who loved the daughter of the Ottoman Pasha Fatima. Pasha promised to marry his daughter to someone who would find a source of water for the village. Rahim was able to build a fountain, but Fatima did not want to marry a commoner and convinced her father to kill him. However, Rahim fled with Fatima's devoted maid. The legend and the fountain are still alive in local lore.

Current status

Currently, the Turkish Fountain in Taman is a tourist attraction. It is a small, squat building with a lattice gate and painted oriental jugs on the façade. Inside there is a small tank that is gradually filled with water from an iron pipe.

Despite its historical value, the fountain is in danger of destruction. The water supply has almost ceased and significant repair work is required. In recent years, a local businessman has opened a cafeteria for tourists next to the fountain and changed the historic façade, causing negative reactions.

Meaning and uniqueness

The Turkish fountain in Taman is the only operating condensation source in Russia. Its uniqueness and historical significance make it an important site for conservation and study. The fountain symbolizes the hard work and engineering knowledge accumulated over centuries, and continues to be an important cultural heritage of Taman.
