Description
The archaeological complex "Germonassa-Tmutarakan" on the Taman Peninsula is a unique archaeological site that preserves traces of life from ancient Greek times to the present. This complex is one of the most significant archaeological monuments in Russia and has federal status.
The history of Hermonassa begins with the founding of a Greek colony in the 6th century BC. From the Greek colony to modern times, this city has experienced many changes and changes of rulers. It was part of the Bosporus Kingdom, the Byzantine Empire, the Bulgarian Khanate, the Khazar State, the Russian Tmutarakan Principality, Byzantium, the Golden Horde, and the possessions of the Genoese and Turks.
Hermonassa was a major center that attracted surrounding settlements. Written sources confirm its significance as a "beautifully built" city. Archaeological research also confirms the scale and richness of this place. Thick cultural layers and artifact finds testify to the picturesque history of Hermonassa.
However, Hermonassa faced serious challenges, such as the destruction of its coastline and the loss of part of its territory. Intensive archaeological work is being carried out on the shoreline to preserve and study the surviving parts of the monument.
Hermonassa-Tmutarakan is not only a historical heritage of Russia, but also a place where research continues into the rich cultural history of this region.
