Description

The history of the museum, located in a building that originally housed a boarding school for visually impaired children, dates back to 1969. After the tragic death of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the students of this school proposed creating a school museum in memory of him.

On the 40th anniversary of the first manned space flight, in April 2001, the museum was opened again, but as a state institution - the Yuri and Valentina Gagarin Memorial Apartment Museum. The opening of the museum was accompanied by the participation of Gagarin's relatives, his fellow students and other prominent personalities.

In subsequent years, the museum was visited by historical figures, such as the commander of the squadron in which Yuri Gagarin flew, as well as other heroic cosmonauts. In 2014, the museum was visited by Valentina Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, and Yuri Lonchakov, a cosmonaut who graduated from college with Yuri Gagarin. In 2016, the museum was visited by the son of Yuri Romanenko, also an astronaut.

The Gagarin Apartment Museum consists of several halls, including the “Road to Space” exhibition, a memorial room for the Gagarin family, a 60s-style cinema hall and a conference room for events and video conferencing. Among the museum's exhibits are memorial items such as furniture, dresses and other artifacts that belonged to the Gagarin family.

Opened after reconstruction in April 2021, the museum has significantly expanded its capabilities and is an important facility for preserving the memory of the legendary flight of the first man into space.
