Description
The clock tower on the main pedestrian street Sovetskaya is one of the symbols of the city of Orenburg. This architectural object has become one of the main attractions due to its unusual form and functionality. The tower was built in several stages, starting in the mid-1980s. It is an extension to a three-story residential building with administrative premises and fits harmoniously into the architectural ensemble of the old street.
The construction of the tower, made of red brick and having a height of about 35 meters, was timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of Orenburg. The first clock-chimes were installed on the tower in 1985, manufactured at the watch factory in the city of Krivoy Rog according to the drawings of Nikolai Kuznetsov. Architect A.S. Ivanov took part in the development of the project.
The main feature of the clock tower was to be the openings from which figures would appear at noon, symbolizing the history of the city. But due to financial difficulties, this project was not completed on time and the construction of the tower was postponed. The tower acquired its final appearance only in 1997, and finishing work continued until 2005.
In May 2013, the updated design of the clock on the tower was unveiled in connection with the 270th anniversary of the city. Bells installed both inside and outside the tower began to play several melodies, including the “Orenburg Down Shawl” and the Orenburg anthem. The idea was also implemented with figures that emerge from the openings every day at a certain time, symbolizing various periods and events in the history of the city.
