Description
The stela, erected in honor of the founding of the city of Orenburg in 1743, is a two-meter granite stone with gold letters indicating this historical date. This monument is located at the intersection of the pedestrian Sovetskaya Street and Krasnoznamenaya Street, and is easy to spot and photograph due to its free access.
Orenburg was founded three times in different places for different reasons. The fortress was originally founded by I.K. Kirillov on the banks of the Or River, on the site of the present city of Orsk, August 31, 1735. However, after the death of Kirillov and his replacement as head of the expedition, V.N. Tatishchev, another location for the fortress was chosen due to flooding and unsatisfactory location.
Tatishchev chose a new location for Orenburg on Krasnaya Gora, but his replacement, I.I. Neplyuev preferred another place, which he considered more suitable. As a result, in 1743 Orenburg was moved to its current location, which is the historical center of the modern city. This year, 1743, is considered the year of the birth of the city of Orenburg, marking its third and final founding.
