Description

John the Baptist Monastery in Kazan is one of the wonderful historical places of the city, located in front of the Spasskaya Tower of the Kazan Kremlin. It was founded by Saint Herman, Archbishop of Kazan, in the 60s of the 16th century. Saint Herman also founded the Sviyazhsk Mother of God Assumption Monastery, the courtyard of which was originally the St. John the Baptist Monastery.

Initially, the monastery consisted of wooden buildings, but in 1649 it was completely destroyed by fire. Then the Moscow merchant Gavrila Fedorovich Antipin erected new brick buildings at his own expense. In 1652, the monastery was consecrated by Metropolitan Cornelius of Kazan and Sviyazhsk in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

One of the significant buildings erected by Gavrila Antipin was the cold three-tented Church of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem with chapels in honor of John the Baptist and the Apostle John the Theologian. In addition, a warm three-story church was built in honor of the Entry of the Blessed Virgin Mary into the Temple.

Throughout history, the monastery was repeatedly subjected to fires and destruction, but was restored again. In 1887, a new temple was founded, the design of which was developed by the architect G. B. Rush. This cathedral, like its predecessors, had three tents and was twice as tall and voluminous.

During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed, and its buildings were used for various offices and institutions. However, in 1992, the monastery was returned to the Kazan diocese, and its gradual restoration and restoration began. Currently, divine services continue in the monastery, and charitable activities are also carried out.

St. John the Baptist Monastery is not only the historical heritage of the city, but also a spiritual center that attracts many believers and tourists with its beauty and history.
