Description

The construction of the building of the Public Places in the Kazan Kremlin took place from 1767 to 1773 under the leadership of the Moscow architect V.I. Kaftyreva. This two-story building, intended for the work of officials and civil servants, is located in the south-eastern part of the Kremlin. Later, new two-story buildings were added to it, and the total length of the building reached 202 meters. The building has a basement with vaulted rooms and windows facing the outside.

The main building is divided into three sections and has two through passages opening onto the courtyard, which is located between the fortress wall and the building itself.

In 1781, as a result of administrative reform, the Kazan viceroyalty was created, and the need arose to place a governor-general. This led to the annexation of part of the chancellery building for the residence of the governor. The main part of this building was converted into a luxurious two-story house with fifteen windows, an attached wing at an angle, and a throne room on the second floor. Restoration work after the fire in 1815 was carried out according to the designs of the architect A. Schmidt, and the building received its current appearance.

Architecturally, the building is made in the style of classicism with a simple bracing of the main facade, creating the illusion of a central and side projections. The facade is decorated with rustication and ends with a triangular pediment. Inside the building there are the Court Chamber, offices for clerks, as well as vaulted rooms in the basement.

A complete restoration of the building was completed in 2005, and since then it has been an important cultural heritage site in Kazan.
