Description
The southwestern tower of the Kazan Kremlin is one of the significant defensive structures built during the 16th century. Its architectural design was developed by masters Ivan Shiryai and Yakov Postnik, and construction took place from 1556 to 1562.
This tower has the shape of a cylinder with a height of 17 meters and a diameter of about 9 meters. Inside, it is equipped in such a way as to effectively repel enemy attacks: two tiers, a conical roof and narrow loophole windows. It served an important role in the city's defense due to its corner location.
Over the past two centuries, restoration work has continued to keep the tower in good condition. The foundations were strengthened, the white cladding and loophole windows were put in order. In 1977-1986, the wooden cone-tent at the top of the tower was completely restored.
This tower, like other defensive structures of the Kazan Kremlin, is an important architectural heritage and evidence of the history of the city’s defense in turbulent times.
