Description

The Church of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, or Pyatnitskaya Church, is a significant parish church of the Kazan diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is located in close proximity to the Kazan Kremlin and has an ancient history, starting with the construction of a wooden temple in 1566.

The wooden church, which was located on the site of the current stone structure, was dedicated to St. Nicholas of Zaraisky and had a chapel in honor of Saint Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. However, in 1579 it was destroyed in a fire that affected part of the city and the northeastern part of the settlement.

The current stone church was built in 1728 at the expense of the merchant Ivan Miklyaev for the workers of the cloth factory. It has an octagon on a quadrangle and is made in the Russian Baroque style. During the 18th - 19th centuries, there were three altars in the temple: the main altar in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord, the right one in the name of the holy Kazan hierarchs, and the left one in honor of St. Paraskeva Friday.

The temple was repeatedly subjected to fires and reconstruction, as a result of which it was restored and renamed several times. In the second half of the 1990s, it was returned to the Kazan diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and became the center of the Chuvash parish.

Today, the church hosts services and also organizes various charitable and social events. It is also a place of pilgrimage and worship for many believers. The Church of St. Paraskeva Friday plays an important role in the religious and cultural life of the city of Kazan.
