Description
The Devil's Settlement is a mountain with a rock mass of the same name at the top, located in the northwestern part of the municipality of the Kyshtym urban district of the Chelyabinsk region of Russia. The rocks at the top are granite outcrops with weathering patterns and a complex of rock flora. It is a geomorphological, botanical and archaeological natural monument, as well as a popular destination for tourism and active recreation. It is often visited by rock climbers.
The origin of the name of the settlement is associated with different versions. According to one of them, the area of the settlement was considered a habitat of evil spirits. According to another version, there could be a place of trade here, which is reflected in the Mansi word “Sart-tan”, which means “front trade”.
The height of the mountain is 347 meters above sea level. The rocks at the top are a folded rock ridge up to 34 meters high. The southern wall of the mountain has a slope of 45 to 80° and descends down into the valley of the Semipalatinka River, and the northern wall ends with a steep ledge.
The Devil's Settlement is also an archaeological site, where the remains of metallurgical production, as well as altars from the early Iron Age and the Middle Ages, were found. Excavations were carried out here at different periods, revealing many artifacts.
This place attracts massive attention from tourists and rock climbers, and is a popular venue for sporting events.
