Description
The monument “Dedicated to the Children of War” in Ulyanovsk is a touching embodiment of the memory of children who became victims of the Great Patriotic War, and those for whom the war took away their childhood. Located on the territory of the 30th Anniversary of Victory Square, this monument is a sculptural composition depicting a girl with a bundle in her hands and a boy with brushwood on a sled. The author of this touching work of art was Maria Galas, a talented sculptor from the city of Zhukovsky, Moscow region. The sculptures are made of bronze, which adds special symbolism and expressiveness to them.
This monument became an important addition to the already existing sculptural ensemble on the 30th anniversary of the Victory Square called “Alley of Pioneer Heroes”. Its installation was carried out with the support of the Council of Veterans of the Ulyanovsk Region and the governor. The opening ceremony on April 28, 2015 brought together residents of Ulyanovsk, high-ranking guests of the city, as well as the Governor of the Ulyanovsk region Sergei Morozov and the Commissioner for the Rights of the Child of the Russian Federation Pavel Astakhov.
It is interesting to note that in the original version of the monument the girl was holding tongs in her hands, and the boy was holding a bucket. However, after discussing the project, it was decided to replace the tongs with a cat, symbolizing the difficult times of the siege of Leningrad. Later, the sculptor presented the project for public discussion, and as a result, the monument received its final form - a girl with a bundle in her hands and a boy with a sled carrying firewood home. On the dark granite pedestal there is an inscription: “Dedicated to the children of war.”
This monument is an important symbol of the memory of those who suffered during the Great Patriotic War, and of those who were forced to grow up too early due to the cruel trials of the war years.
