Description
The Chesnokovsky chalk mountains in the Perevolotsky district of the Orenburg region are hilly terrain, distinguished by the whiteness of real writing chalk, which is exposed here on the surface. These mountains extend for about 5 km from north to west and are estimated to be more than 70 million years old. They are a significant geological feature, on the tops and in the ravines of which ancient fossils can often be found, such as belemnite rostra and ammonite remains, indicating an ancient sea or ocean that existed here during the Cretaceous era.
Rare plants adapted to chalk soil grow in this region, such as chalk chamomile, chalk toadflax and others, classified as an endangered species and listed in the Red Book. It is also home to various species of animals, including snakes, lizards and small rodents, as well as steppe eagles, which often hunt in this area.
The Chesnokovsky chalk mountains are included in the list of protected natural sites in the Orenburg region, which prohibits any economic activity on their territory. To reach these mountains from Orenburg you should follow the Buzuluk highway to Perevolotsk, and then to the village of Chesnokovka. The total distance is about 102 km, making this region accessible for excursions and exploring its unique nature.
